Podgorica, Montenegro (21 May 2016) – Prime Minister Milo Đukanovic met today with President of the European Council Donald Tusk. The Prime Minister, in a very cordial and friendly atmosphere, welcomed Tusk and briefly commented on the development of Montenegro during the past ten years, noting that we can be satisfied with the achieved, and assessed that Montenegro, within the limits of available resources, responsibly worked on achieving strategic goals, which are primarily related to strengthening institutions, economic development and progress towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
“We remain stable and committed to our further path of integration, which can serve as an incentive for our neighbourhood,” PM Đukanović said.
Speaking of the accession negotiations Prime Minister Đukanović said that Montenegro remains strongly focused on the rule of law, especially since it already achieved certain results that further encourage the country to be persistent on this way. The Prime Minister thanked for the overall support that EU gives to Montenegro.
“Without it we would not be where we are. This is a good investment,” the Prime Minister said and added that Montenegro will continue to promote European and Euro-Atlantic idea and its values in the region.
The President of the European Council Donald Tusk expressed great pleasure for visiting Montenegro during celebration of the tenth anniversary of the restoration of Montenegro’s independence, and that it can be proud of its achievements. He said that Montenegro’s membership in the EU and NATO is mutual interest and wished that Montenegrin path towards membership in the EU is as successful as NATO membership. Tusk paid tribute to the current results of the Government of Montenegro, as the outer and the inner political agenda and said that Montenegro can be and is the leader of integration processes in the region.
“Your success is proof that nothing is easy, but it is possible,” Donald Tusk concluded.
