    PR ServiceDuring his working visit to New York, Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović delivered speech at the United Nations Security Council. Minister Darmanović participated in the open debate on the global effort to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by non-state actors.

    The Minister stressed that Montenegro, through proactive and comprehensive approach at the national level and through establishing a solid national framework, seeks to contribute to global efforts in eliminating the risk of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by non-state actors.     He recalled that Montenegro was the first Western Balkan country to adopt a national strategy on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. He also condemned the increasingly frequent violations of the relevant Security Council resolutions, and stressed the importance of continuous and direct action on the national, regional and international level. The Minister emphasised Montenegro’s strong commitment to the implementation of Resolution 1540 and reiterated the commitment of the Government of Montenegro to actively contribute to the joint and coherent efforts of the international community in the forthcoming period through engagement of all segments of society in order to provide an effective response to global challenges.

    Minister Darmanović also had meetings with UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenča and Assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations El Ghassim Wane.

    During his meeting with Mr Jenča, Minister Darmanović confirmed Montenegro’s commitment to multilateralism and active action in the field of human rights, sustainable development and peace and security, as key pillars of the Organisation. The officials assessed Montenegro’s role in strengthening stability in the Western Balkans and strengthening the European perspective of the region as very constructive. Mr Jenča congratulated on the NATO membership and voiced confidence that Montenegro will continue to be a reliable partner, both regionally and globally.

    At the meeting with Mr Wane, Minister Darmanović reiterated Montenegro’s firm commitment to continue to contribute to the preservation and improvement of international peace and security, and to expand its engagement in UN humanitarian and peacekeeping missions. Mr Wane emphasised that the United Nations appreciates quality and constructive partnership with Montenegro, and expressed gratitude for its responsible participation in peacekeeping missions.
