Podgorica, Montenegro (16 July 2015) — Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Montenegro welcomes the signing of the agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme in Vienna on 14 July 2015. We highly appreciate the results of the negotiations which, after more than ten years, resulted in a final agreement on key aspects of peaceful use of nuclear potential and suspension of the whole set of restrictive measures against Iran.
Representatives of five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5 + 1) and Iran confirmed the key aspects of the agreement reached in Lausanne on 2 April 2015 and the detailed and complex agreement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), complemented by five technical annexes, and successfully completed many years of diplomatic efforts to resolve this important issue, thus testifying to mutual commitment to the preservation of universal peace and security.
The new agreement is of great geopolitical significance as it is expected to contribute to the elimination of tension and build confidence in the Middle East region and at the global level as well. At the same time, the agreement will be a stimulus to further development of Iran, and its responsible role in international relations, which is in the interest of global peace and security.
Iran has pledged that, under no circumstances, its nuclear potential will be used for the purchase or development of nuclear weapons, which is particularly significant in the context of applying provisions of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Weapon of Mass Destruction (NPT), as a key international instrument in this field.
Bearing in mind the circumstances in which it was achieved, the agreement represents a rare example of successful multilateral diplomatic negotiations in recent years and the confirmation that a joint action based on firm political commitment, mutual respect and trust is the path towards positive resolution of long-standing and complex international disputes.
In line with the practice of continuous monitoring and supporting the overall process of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear programme, Montenegro will continue to support activities to be be undertaken with the aim of full and effective implementation of the agreement.
