Podgorica, Montenegro (20 July 2016) – Montenegro’s membership in NATO is a long-term guarantee of sovereignty and security and precondition for stable economic development, Minister of Economy Vladimir Kavarić said. Minister Kavarić, at the round table “NATO membership – a chance for Economics and Business”, said that there are numerous economic benefits of Montenegro’s membership in the Alliance.
“Being a member of NATO means to be partner of the most developed economies of the world. This is a chance for economic development of Montenegro because it provides access to the market of 900 million people”, Minster Kavarić said.
According to him, membership in the Alliance positively affects the perception of investors that Montenegro is stable and safe place to invest. He added that new NATO member can use money from the funds for the construction of infrastructures, secure assistance for the destruction of surplus weapons and ammunition, as well as that Montenegro will pay membership fee but that is symbolic in relation to the benefits, adding that membership provides Montenegrin companies to participate in NATO tenders.
“NATO membership significantly improves credibility of Montenegro as an investment destination and this is a chance for our entrepreneurs,” Minister Kavarić said.
US Ambassador to Montenegro, Margaret Ann Uyehara said that NATO is community of common values including the rule of law, transparency and good governance.
“These values lead to economic growth in many ways, because it is no secret that investors are looking for stability and predictability, democratic and good Government, measures to fight corruption and commitment to the rule of law. NATO membership is important for Montenegro, its further integration into the Euro-Atlantic community,” Ambassador Uyehara said, noting that new investments enable new jobs, infrastructure development and better living conditions for the citizens of Montenegro.
Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Montenegro Marko Miročević said that NATO invitation and participation in NATO Summit is an encouragement for foreign investors, because it sends a positive signal that Montenegro is a safe and stable destination for business.
“Stable, safe and predictable business environment is a key to Montenegro’s economic progress, since only such business environment keeps existing foreign investors and attracts new ones,” Miročević said and added that this is especially important for investors from NATO member states whose experience is important for the further development of Montenegrin economy and business.
Hungarian Ambassador in Montenegro Christian Posa said that Montenegro, among the countries in the region, made the biggest progress. He said that Montenegro in 2017 has every chance to be a full member of NATO but there is a lot to do.
“You have an independent state, institutions are prepared and expect investors but Montenegro needs to be attractive country and to attract foreign investors,” Ambassador Posa said and added that in some states after the accession to NATO and European Union foreign capital increased more than twice.
Hungarian Ambassador said he wants Montenegro and its citizens to continue this pace of reform of state institutions and society.
Director of Stratex Development Montenegro Darren Evans said that there is great economic benefit from future membership of Montenegro in NATO. According to him, the ratification is a free marketing campaign for Montenegro. Evans said that Montenegro is good in the field of tourism and that it should continue this development. He pointed out that Montenegro has untapped potential that would improve it as attractive tourist destination.
“I guarantee that there are billions of euros of income from the north over the next decade,” Evans said, noting that Montenegro should focus on education because businessmen want qualified workforce.
