Podgorica, Montenegro (10 May 2017) — The upper house of the Spanish Parliament ratified earlier today the Protocol on Montenegro’s Accession to NATO, meaning that the ratification process in this country was brought to an end. Spain thus became the 27th country of the Alliance to ratify the Protocol.

We recall that the national procedure has been completed in the Netherlands as well. After expiry of the deadline for entering into force of the ratification act in that country on 1 June, which will mark the formal completion of the ratification process in all NATO member states, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will send a letter of invitation to Montenegro to join NATO.

By depositing the instruments of ratification, scheduled for 5 June, Montenegro will formally become a NATO member state.
