Montenegro’s membership in NATO will significantly improve the State’s position before the European partners, said the national coordinator for the European Union (EU), Aleksandar Andrija Pejovic, stating that, regardless of the current developments the EU accession would go as planned.
He said that membrship in NATO will be confirmation that Montenegro has implemented the necessary reforms in a quality way, especially in the field of rule of law, which is the common denominator of two integration processes.
“It will mean that we made significant progress in the field of justice, fundamental rights, the fight against corruption and organized crime, which are essential for our European path, and that it is recognized and valued by the members of the Alliance,” Pejovic said for Mina Montenegrin News agency.
He added that NATO membership will further enhance the reputation of Montenegro in the world and improve chances for foreign investment which will have a positive impact on the economic development of the country.
“We should not forget that most of the members of the Alliance, are part of the EU and surely our full participation would significantly contribute to the position that we have before our European partners,” Pejovic said.
He added that the process of European integration is always in the focus of the Government, because it is a strategic foreign policy goal of the state.
“This is supported by the results we have achieved in the accession negotiations. The success, reflected in the 24 open chapters, two of which are temporarily closed, would not have been possible without the strong commitment of the Government to implement the necessary reforms,” Pejovic concluded.
