Austria supports the integration of the Western Balkan countries into the European Union (EU), said the Austrian Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Integration, Sebastian Kurz, stressing the importance of the rule of law, fight against corruption and freedom of the media.
Kurtz is on an official visit to Montenegro today, during which he meets with Montenegrin officials, and representatives of civil society and the media.
At a press conference after a meeting with Montenegrin Foreign Minister and European Integration Igor Luksic,he said that Austria is a great friend of Montenegro.
“We support the integration of all countries of the Western Balkans into the EU, especially in Montenegro,” said Kurtz, stressing the importance of cooperation in the region.
Kurtz pointed to the importance of freedom of the media, stating that he had heard that there were several attacks on journalists in Montenegro. “It is very sad and this should not happen,” Kurtz said.
Without freedom of the media, as he said, there is no democracy.
Asked by reporters what he would say to civil society and media in Montenegro, he said that he was visiting the country primarily to talk with them, and to hear what they have to say.
According to Luksic, two ministers discussed the cooperation in the region.
Minister Luksic presented to his counterpart the results of the process of Montenegro’s accession to NATO.
It was said that the visit of the Austrian Minister is important because of the summit on the Western Balkans, to be held in Vienna in late August this year.
