The U.S. Department of State has reviewed the detailed delimitation line of the Kosovo-Montenegro border prepared by the Kosovo State Commission for Marking and Maintenance of the State Border.
We understand the basis for the Commission’s demarcation effort was the 1974 Yugoslav Constitution, said the US embassy in Pristina.
That stance was welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, writing on his Twitter account that the US embassy comfirmed that the demarcation was correct.
“That demarcation base was used in 2007. in Comprehensive Proposal for the Kosovo Status by Martti Ahtisaari and in 2008 in the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo “, says the embassy.
The Kosovo Assembly a few months ago adopted a resolution requesting that the border with Montenegro is one that is defined by the Constitution of 1974, believing that in this way it would “recover” more than 2.4 thousand hectares from Montenegro, that some opposition parties in the country consider to belong to Kosovo.
However, as pointed out by the State Department, after reviewing the maps from 1940 to the present, including those used by the Commission to mark boundaries, the State Department found that the recent delimitation already closely follows the boundary defined in the 1974 Constitution.
“The boundaries from 2008 coincide with those proposed in 2015 to the details. Please note that the conclusion of the Agreement on Border Demarcation EU condition for liberalization of visa regime and represents an important step in Kosovo’s path towards European integration,” reads the statement of the US Embassy.
