The majority of Montenegrin citizens with voting rights supports the country’s membership in NATO, which is the first time since doing opinion polls on this topic that most adult citizens support joining the Alliance, announced the Government’s Communication Team for NATO Membership. According to research by two agencies, the support for NATO membership ranges from 41.6 to 47 percent.
Public opinion polls were conducted earlier this month as part of regular surveys by specialized agencies “IPSOS – Strategic Marketing” and “Damar”.
According to field research conducted by agency “Damar” from 8 to 14 June 2015 on 1,100 respondents in 10 municipalities of Montenegro, 41.6 percent of the citizens said they supported Montenegro’s membership in NATO, 39.7 percent citizens said they were against it , and 18.7 percent of those surveyed said they did not know.
“These results represent 5.2 percent increase in the number of supporters of NATO in the past isx months, accompanied by 2.3 percent decline in the number of opponents of membership in NATO,” reports Communication Team.
Agency “IPSOS – Strategic Marketing” ’s field research, that was conducted from 4 to 11 June 2015 on 1,050 respondents aged over 18 years in 17 cities of Montenegro, shows that at a referendum on membership in NATO, 47 percent of citizens would vote in favor of membership, while 41 percent would be against it.
“Compared to February 2015, support for NATO membership has been increased by about 10 percent. Applied to the number of eligible voters these percentages mean that Montenegro’s membership in NATO now supports about 260 thousand citizens while in February there were between 185 and 190 thousand supporters, ” the statement said.
The agency “Damar” concludes that in the past four years number of supporters of Montenegrin membership in NATO slightly increased, as well as did the percentage of opponents, because there was a parallel declining trend in the percentage of those who do not have a clear position on this issue.
