Media freedom is at the core of the integration process in the European Union (EU) and there are no negotiations, said today the European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn.
He said this in Brussels at the opening of the third Speak Up (free speech) Conference which is dedicated to freedom of expression and press freedom in the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey.
The conference is attended by more than 300 media representatives, government institutions and NGOs from Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo and Turkey.
Hahn said that the state can not have a functioning rule of law, with the cases against journalists.
“It can not be argued that you have a transparent economy and you have no real information about who are the owners of the media,” Hahn said.
According to him, the bad media situation affects the overall readiness of accession countries to join the EU.
