German Ambassador Gudrun Steinacker says that her country was in favor of Montenegro receiving an invitation to join NATO this year.
The ambassador spoke during a meeting with representatives of the Liberal Party of Montenegro, and noted that Montenegro did not receive this invitation in 2014 because of “geopolitical problems in the wider area.”
According to Steinacker, “Montenegro as a member is the only thing missing in a line connecting Croatia, Albania, Greece and Turkey.”
She said that “the story about the border with Montenegro would not have been launched from Bosnia-Herzegovina if Montenegro was a NATO member.”
“If Montenegro is a member of NATO, no one will dare to touch the borders of a member of NATO and that is something that membership in this organization can offer as additional security,” the German diplomat was quoted as saying.
