Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Luksic is the most serious candidate to be proposed for the new Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) in the name of Montenegro, ‘’Dan’’ learned from diplomatic circles.
Bearing in mind that the elections will be held next year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Montenegro will timely make a decision on whether it will have its own candidate or it will support other candidate, and that in this sense all the rest is speculation.
Government will make the final decision on candidacy on the basis of the results of lobbying in the states in the region.
However, according to unofficial information of ‘’Dan’’, some Montenegrin diplomats in Western capitals are already testing the ground on whether there is support for a possible candidacy of Luksic for the place of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, which in 2016 should belong to some of the Eastern European countries.
When asked by ‘’Dan’’ if it is true that Igor Luksic is Montenegrin candidate for the post of UN Secretary General, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MVPEI) have not confirmed nor denied this information.
From 2010 to 2012, Luksic served as the Prime Minister of Montenegro, and since the return of a DPS leader Milo Djukanovic at the prime minister’s office, Luksic acts as a chief of Montenegrin diplomacy. Also, Luksic said recently that he is not interested in running for a position in the DPS, bearing in mind the approaching congress of the party in June.
