Cooperation with the 29 members of the alliance, “the voice” among democratic countries, security and a step towards ensuring the stability in the Balkans, are some of the benefits that Montenegro will gain by joining NATO, the ambassador of the United States to NATO, Douglas Lute, said.
In an interview with RTCG, Lute said that next Thursday would be a historic day for Montenegro, but also for the Alliance.
The protocol on Montenegro’s accession to the alliance will be signed on 19 May.
“Only seven times in the 67 year history of NATO, we have done what we will do next Thursday – sign the accession protocol”, Lute said, as reported by RTCG portal.
After that, as he explained, the protocol will be sent to NATO member states and it has to be ratified by all 29 of them.
“In the last six cases, the ratification lasted for few months”, Lute said, adding that there is no deadline for it.
NATO countries have different ratification processes, but it is expected that the process will also last for several months in Montenegro’s case.
Asked when the US is to ratify the protocol, Lute said that it depended on two factors – efficiency of the US president Barack Obama’s administration and Senate.
