NATO initiative for Montenegro’s membership carries the risk of a further fuelling the tension in Europe, said the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
“In general, the further expansion of NATO from our point of view is a negative process,” Peskov told reporters .
He said that NATO expansion does not contribute to European security.
“On the contrary, it carries the risk of further increasing tensions on the continent,” said Kremlin spokesman.
The foreign ministers of NATO member states in Brussels yesterday signed a Protocol on the Accession of Montenegro to the Alliance.
Peskov said that Russia welcomes the initiative of the Secretary General of NATO on re-session of the joint Russia-NATO Council until the Alliance’s summit in July.
“The Russian side has never avoided the dialogue, we have always been supporters of dialogue. We believe that this is the only way to resolve the issues that are before us,” said Peskov.
