Montenegro in NATO due to stability of region

NATO membership is not only important for Montenegro, but also for the stability of the region, as well as for security of the Mediterranean, American officials emphasized during talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Igor Luksic.

Luksic in Washington talked with the members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Senator Christopher Murphy, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee Senator John McCain and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe Senator Ron Johnson.

Our Head of diplomacy thanked the US for the overall assistance and special support that the US Congress gave to Montenegro in the implementation of the strategic objective-membership in NATO. He stressed that the processes of European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkans were the precondition for the development and progress of all countries individually.

‘’Montenegro works with high intensity and commitment on implementation reforms in key areas, in order to ensure an invitation for membership by the end of this year”, Luksic said.

The participants emphasized that Montenegro has made significant progress towards full membership in NATO, and that this is confirmed, inter alia, by the decision on initiation of intensive and focused dialogue with Montenegro in Wales.

“American officials stressed that Montenegro’s membership in NATO as soon as possible is important not only for Montenegro, but also for the stability of the region as a whole, as well as for the security of the Mediterranean, stating that Montenegro will continue to have a strong congressional support in the finale of this process”, the statement said.

During the talks they exchanged views on current developments in the region.
