Montenegro’s Capital Finally Gets New Mayor. Lets respect each other, the opposition NOVA says. Montenegro’s vital interest is NATO memebership.

The capital city’s parliament elected on Monday the Democratic Party of Socialists official Slavoljub Stijepovic for Podgorica’s mayor. Both the DPS and the smaller ruling Social Democratic Party supported Stijepovic. Opposition deputies left the session prior to vote. Stijepovic said that every citizen of Podgorica, whether from the center or the periphery, will be the first and most important task of his term. He promised to take care of every part of the city, the youngest citizens as well as those elderly, and that he will not forget those who work in sport and culture.

Leader of the opposition NOVA party, whichis the part od the Democtratic Front, Andrija Mandic said his party, as a party of Serbian people in Montenegro, wants to show additional determination by strengthening the Front and the overall democratic consciousness in the country. He said that NOVA is “actually a Christian party” and sends an invitation to everyone to respect each other and to to find the new formula of cooperation. In his opinion, this should be done working for the benefit of the general community who gathered in the Democratic Front.


The youngest party in Montenegro, Montenegrin Democratic Union,CDU, perceived membership in NATO as a “life interest” of the country and as a priority of Montenegrin politics. On Monday, the President and Vice President of the CDU, Miodrag Vlahovic and Dragutin Martinovic, met the German ambassador Steinacker. The party officials stated that the CDU is devoted and dedicated to the country’s bid to join NATO and EU.
