The Parliamentary Assembly of NATO, adopted adopted today in Budapest, a Declaration in which it recommends to all members of the Alliance to remain committed to the policy of open doors and before the end of the year make a decision on the invitation of Montenegro.
The Declaration recommends that the candidate countries redouble their efforts and resolve open issues and fulfill the tasks. Officials of Hungary, which is our contact country for NATO, strongly support Montenegro joining NATO.
Deputy Secretary General of NATO Alexander Vershbow said that “our common goal is a free and stable Europe.”
“It’s a challenge, and open-door policiy is one of the best ways to achieve that goal. We will decide on each aspirant country individually. First up is Montenegro, between the two summits, before the end of the year we will decide on the membership invitation to Montenegro”, said Vershbow.
Montenegrin Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic said he was grateful that the Declaration was dedicated to the enlargement policy, and that it clearly calls for members to invite Montenegro before the end of the year.
“Montenegro demonstrated a full partnership and a sincere commitment to the NATO values. We have shown that we see partnership, not only as an opportunity to benefit, but also as an obligation to support future allies in the most demanding challenges”, said Krivokapic.
