Montenegro stop destination for refugees from the Middle East

One more time it was confirmed that Montenegro is an important point of illegal immigration. In Albania, close to the border with Montenegro was stopped the chain of illegal people smuggling. Albanian border police detained 81 illegal migrants, mainly from Syria, who were trying to cross the border to Montenegro. In recent months the number of asylum seekers who come from Africa and the Middle East in Montenegro has been greatly increased. Most of the asylum seekers from Syria come to Montenegro via Albania.

Albanian police stopped a small truck near Hani i Hotit border crossing point to Montenegro, which was carrying 81 foreigners. Verifications showed that these people came to Albania in an illegal way and that they were trying to cross the border to Montenegro illegally. The driver of the truck, Gentian Gjonaj, was arrested and is being prosecuted for human trafficking. Police detained 81 illegal migrants who were trying to cross the border to Montenegro.

In recent months the number of asylum seekers who come from Africa and the Middle East in Montenegro has been greatly increased. Most of them who came from Syria come to Montenegro via Albania. Asylum seekers usually cross the border illegally and when they are in Montenegro they seek refugee status. For most of them, Montenegro is just a transit country and after some days most of them leave towards western Europe.

Asylum seekers who arrive in Montenegro obtain residence documents and are being housed in the central collective center. Most of them are not staying in Montenegro for more than three or five days. During this period, most of asylum seekers leave Montenegro and the directorate for asylum decides the suspension of proceedings in about 99 percent of the cases.
