Montenegro’s membership in NATO is the greatest foreign-policy success since the restoration of statehood, but also a prerequisite for unhindered economic development, a stronger inflow of foreign investments, and a powerful flywheel to our integration process into the European Union, said parliament speaker Ivan Brajovic.

He received today the President of the National Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Italy Raffaele Cantone.

On this occasion, he thanked for the concrete and consistent support that Italy has so far provided to Montenegro on the European and Euro-Atlantic paths and stressed that Italy is the country with which Montenegro has the most intensive cooperation, focused on the areas of justice, the rule of law, freedom and security, environment, agriculture and rural development.

Brajovic reminded that Montenegro is the first candidate country to which a new approach to the negotiations is being applied, which implies that Chapters 23 and 24 are opened at the beginning and remain open until all other chapters are closed.

The head of the Montenegrin parliament is convinced that our country will be able to achieve visible results, both in prevention and in the fight against corruption, in the process of harmonization with the EU acquis in this area. We are aware of the fact that the rule of law is a key factor in further development.

According to Brajovic’s cabinet, the interlocutors pointed out the importance of the fight against corruption, which is in the focus of all EU member states, and assessed that the effective implementation of adopted laws is of key importance, both in the prevention of corruption and in its repression.

It is jointly estimated that today’s visit of the President of the National Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Italy Raffaele Cantone is a major contribution to the further strengthening of cooperation in this area, which will in future result in new models of improvement of anti-corruption policies.

The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy in Montenegro Vincenzo del Monaco.
