Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Luksic, sent a Letter of Intent to the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg, by which Montenegro has expressed interest to join the Alliance and the willingness to accept the rights and obligations deriving from membership .
As he says, the Letter of Intent is of procedural nature, but also an essential step as it is a way to create conditions to move into the final phase of the process.
The next step is drafting of the Accession Protocol, which will be distributed to members of the Alliance for ratification.
“What is essential is that with this act, by answering to the letter that the Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg sent in December, and thus formalizing invitation to Montenegro to join the Alliance, we in fact expressed readiness for continuation of reforms in this field in the period up to completion of the ratification process, in the same time paving the way for the next steps, in terms that Montenegro is a country that will in all phases be ready to take over and carry out the obligations of membership,” said Luksic.
This, as he pointed out , means a further commitment to the rule of law, public support, developing security system, both in terms of the quality of security services, as well as in terms of interoperability, and the interoperability of our defense forces.
