Southeast Europe is important to the US

A regional meeting of the process Brdo-Brioni, which brings together the leaders of the countries of Southeast Europe, has began in Zagreb. The meeting, organized by the presidents of Croatia and Slovenia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and Borut Pahor, is attended by all leaders of the countries of South Eastern Europe, among them the President of Montenegro, Filip Vujanovic.

Honorary guests of the meeting are American Vice President Joe Biden, President of the European Council Donald Tusk, and Austrian President Heinz Fischer.

HRT reports that this is the first visit by a senior US official after seven years and the clear sign of turning their interests towards the southeast of Europe.

Biden and his wife arrived in Zagreb by the plane Airforce 2. Upon arrival Biden told reporters in Zagreb that the region of Southeast Europe is of particular interest to the United States for 25 years.

According to him, the regional initiative Brdo-Brioni is doing a good job because in the past five years it successfuly brings together all the leaders to talk.

A veteran of diplomacy, 73-year-old Biden is a real expert for Southeast Europe. “I was here when Tito was still alive, and then Tudjman. Now you know how old I am,” joked Biden.

Summit participants will discuss the stability of Southeast Europe, a large refugee crisis and the security challenges that Europe is facing following recent attacks in Paris.

Members of the BiH presidency Dragan Covic, Bakir Izetbegovic and Mladen Ivanic, president of Serbia Tomislav Nikolic, Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga and President of Albania Bujar Nishani are also attending the meeting.

Arrival of high profile guests in Zagreb is followed by an extremely strong security measures. From 20.00 on Tuesday a special traffic regulation was enforced which will last until tonight and which also includes closing of certain roads in the city center for several hours.
