Belgium supports the efforts of Montenegro on the road to NATO and EU, as well as the principle that each state in the way of integration should be assessed individually, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium Didier Reynders.
At the news conference, after a meeting with his Montenegrin counterpart, Igor Luksic, Reynders stressed the importance of forming a legal framework which is in progress, adding that they will also monitor everything that happens in the implementation of the legislative framework.
“Progress has been made regarding the legal framework for the fight against corruption and various forms of discrimination, as well as reform of the judiciary,” he explained.
Now, he added, followers the implementation of these reforms in practice. Belgium will, as Reynders said, also support implementation of the law and not just reform of the legislative framework.
Reynders said he was satisfied with the cooperation of Belgium with Montenegro.
He also said he was particularly pleased that Montenegro has the same position on certain international issues, especially when it comes to the difficult situation in Ukraine and the fight against terrorism.
He stressed the importance of regional cooperation in the integration and added that there is an opportunity to strengthen regional integration and cooperation especially between the Western Balkans and the Benelux.
Luksic expressed gratitude to Belgium for is support at the road to the EU. He says that this support is not only political but also practical, expert support in many projects.
Luksic points out that the next phase of integration would depend on the progress achieve primarily in the area of rule of law.
“There are several areas in which we are working intensively, but I am certain that Montenegro will show a willingness to deal with all the challenges along the way,” said Luksic.
