Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that getting the invitation is historic achievement for Montenegro.
“Montenegro has implemented significant reforms and demonstrated a commitment to our values and to international security. Membership will mean greater safety for Montenegro and NATO”, said Stoltenberg at a press conference in Brussels after the Ministerial Meeting.
He added that Montenegro was reformed with the help of NATO.
“We are pleased that we will continue to work closely with the Government of Montenegro during the accession process”, said Stoltenberg.
Open-door policy of NATO, he added, has brought great success to Alliance.
Foreign Minister Igor Luksic said that after the opening of negotiations with the European Union the day has also come for obtaining NATO invitation.
“It’s definitely an expected decision but also recognition of all the work we have done. This is an important day for the Alliance. We are grateful to all Member States for giving us the invitation. The reforms will have to continue, and it will continue. We are aware of all these obligations”, said Luksic.
