NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg expects the Alliance will decide on Montenegro’s membership at the forthcoming summit on 8–9 July.
”We are now in the process of finalising the invitation to Montenegro to join the Alliance and we will likely decide that Montenegro becomes 29th member of NATO at our summit”, Stoltenberg said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
He added that NATO enlargement was very important for stability and peace both in the region and beyond and that enlargement policy would be continued.
Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic earlier said that Montenegro could become a full member of NATO by mid-2017.
On 15 February, NATO and Montenegro began talks on the country’s accession to NATO in Brussels.
