The opening of new chapters in negotiations between Montenegro and the European Union (EU) is the best message to all who doubted that process of enlargement would be stopped, the national coordinator for the EU, Aleksandar Andrija Pejovic said, stating there is no alternative to the EU for the countries of the Western Balkans.
He said that in addition to Montenegro, Turkey opened another chapter in negotiations with the EU, as well.
“In this way, the sent message is that the process of enlargement continues and that, despite a certain exit of one large state, those countries that want to become part of the EU have the opportunity to do so,” Pejovic said at a briefing for media representatives.
He added that from the Summit in Paris it was announced at the highest level that there is political support for enlargement.
“The French president Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have sent a clear message that the process of enlargement continues, that the Western Balkans is in the focus of the most important countries of the EU and that in this respect enlargement process will continue when it comes to the Western Balkans, despite Brexit,” Pejovic concluded.
