Montenegro could take part in the NATO summit in May as a full member and to be formally admitted after that, Foreign Minister Srdjan Darmanovic said.
Commenting the statement of the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg that Montenegro could become a member in June, Darmanovic said that the decision on the ratification has to pass a constitutional deadlines in the Netherlands.
“The moment when the upper home of the Spanish Parliament confirms our ratification of the Protocol of Accession to NATO, it will be the last vote in the member states,” Darmanovic said in an intreview with daily Vijesti.
He added that the constitutional deadline of two months in the Netherlands remains, in which theoretically the referendum on the treaty can be held.
According to him, if there is no referendum, which is likely to be assumed, one can not know with certainty when the Netherlands will be able to hand over the instruments of ratification in the State Department in Washington and whether it would be before the summit or later.
“Since it is a technical detail, there is a real possibility that NATO states that Montenegro de facto acquired the status of member state and that it at the summit take its place at the table, not as an observer but as a full member. The formal and solemn ceremony would be held several days later,” Darmanovic said.
