The first instance court has sentenced doctors of the Bijelo Polje General Hospital Tomislav Jeremic and Haka Tahirovic to seven months in prison, and Zvonko Puletic and Jela Cimbaljevic to six months of house arrest because they did not prevent the infection of five babies in November 2014, when one baby died.
The verdict pointed out that Jeremić, Tahirovic and Puletic did not take appropriate hygiene measures at the gynecological and obstetrical departments and the Department of Neonatology, and did not perform regular controls at these departments, nor did they order taking swabs for controlling devices, equipment and sanitary materials, as well as Sanitary Control of employees.
“All that has led to poor hygienic conditions in these departments, resulting in an infection caused by bacteria and the disease from dangerous infectious diseases-sepsis. Of five infected babies, one have died,” the panel said.
This is a first instance verdict so the convicted and the prosecution have the right to appeal to the Appellate Court within 15 days after receiving the judgment.
