The European Union (EU), at a time when its unity and stability are in the first place, will continue to implement its policies and clearly set strategic goals, and extension to the countries of the Western Balkans is one of them, it was said during the meetings that the Secretary of State for European integration and chief negotiator Ambassador Aleksandar Andrija Pejovic had in Brussels with representatives of the European Commission.
Ambassador Pejovic held separate meetings with Director General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Christian Danielsson and the newly appointed Director for Western Balkans at the Directorate General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Genoveva Ruiz Calavera.
It was announced that the interlocutors of the Ambassador Pejovic communicated firm commitment to preserve the unity of the EU and not to jeopardize the implementation of any of the policies and strategic directions of the EU.
“They stressed that the EU’s doors remain open for accession of new members and that the extension, as one of the core policies of the EU, will continue along the same principles as before. They said that the key criterion for accession, as before, will be speed and quality of reforms on the road to full membership,” the statement said.
Director-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Christian Danielsson said that the European Union will remain true to its principles and that the countries of the Western Balkans have its place in the EU.
